Italy; pooled European cohorts
Baseline undernutrition was associated with greater odds of belonging to a rapidly declining cognitive trajectory (OR 1.71, 95% CI 1.06–2.77). The association was driven mainly by phenotypic GLIM malnutrition criteria.
Observational association; reverse causation remains plausible because early cognitive change can worsen nutrition; MMSE-based trajectories are relatively coarse; findings do not prove nutritional treatment prevents cognitive decline.
3,852 adults aged 65–96 years followed in two longitudinal population-based ageing cohorts
Nutrition assessment may be relevant not only to weight and muscle outcomes but also to cognitive trajectories. It strengthens the case for integrating nutrition into healthy-ageing and cognitive-health assessment rather than treating it as a separate topic.
